This test evaluates the mapping from input orthographic word-forms to lexical semantics as well as the integrity of the semantic store, emphasizing the ability to discriminate between similar concepts. Items are drawn from the same superordinate categories as in the picture naming and auditory word-picture matching tests. The 80 trials use the same target and foil combinations as in the auditory word-picture matching test.
Example trial from the visual word-picture matching test.
Materials:
80 printed object names
320 digital color photographs depicting the 80 target concepts and 3 items semantically related to each
Procedure:
the name of an object is presented visually in the center of the screen simultaneously with four object pictures
patient attempts to select the picture that matches the name
foil items are close semantic neighbors of the target (e.g., knife, spoon, plate for the target item fork)
Data analysis:
%correct overall and for each category, chi-square tests for category effects
mean response time by category, ANCOVA for category effects
