I use functional brain imaging techniques and behavioral assessment of neurological patients and healthy participants to understand how these processes are implemented in the brain. One focus of my work is the application of machine learning techniques to fMRI and MEG data to investigate how word meaning (i.e., lexical concepts) relate to the sensory and motor processes through which the brain interacts with the world. This line of research should lead to better diagnostic tools and clinical interventions for semantic deficits resulting from stroke, traumatic brain injury, Alzheimer’s disease, and temporal lobe dementia, as well as more effective neurosurgical planning procedures for epilepsy and brain tumor patients.

Degrees:

Ph.D. Cognitive Neuroscience, University of California, Los Angeles, 2009
M.A. Psychology, University of California, Los Angeles, 2005
Clinical Psychologist, Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (Brazil), 2003
Bachelor Psychology, Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (Brazil), 2001

Links:

Leo Fernandino’s website
BrainExpo
MCW Neurology Faculty
Faculty Collaboration Database

Contact Information:

Medical College of Wisconsin
Department of Neurology
8701 Watertown Plank Road
Milwaukee, WI 53226
lfernandino@mcw.edu
Tel: 414-955-7388

Assistant Professor of Neurology Jump to: Background and Interests Degrees Links Contact Information Background and Interests: My research investigates the neural mechanisms of language processing and semantic memory.
