Background and Interests:

My research investigates the neural mechanisms of language processing and semantic memory. I use functional brain imaging techniques and behavioral assessment of neurological patients and healthy participants to understand how these processes are implemented in the brain. One focus of my work is the application of machine learning techniques to fMRI and MEG data to investigate how word meaning (i.e., lexical concepts) relate to the sensory and motor processes through which the brain interacts with the world. This line of research should lead to better diagnostic tools and clinical interventions for semantic deficits resulting from stroke, traumatic brain injury, Alzheimer’s disease, and temporal lobe dementia, as well as more effective neurosurgical planning procedures for epilepsy and brain tumor patients.
